2025 Dragon Award finalists
A good look at some of the best SF/F published in the last year

Awards are complicated things: the science fiction and fantasy scene has an overabundance of them, with a ton aimed at honoring the best works in fairly small categories. Aside from the Hugo, Nebula, and Locus Awards, it's sometimes hard to get an idea of what fandom is enjoying or collectively putting out as the best works of the year.
That's okay: it's a challenge that in and of itself helps show that "fandom" isn't one population, but a scattered collection of a whole bunch of fans. While the Hugo and Nebula Awards are still the gold standard when it comes to honoring the past year's excellence in publishing, I've been finding that the Dragon Awards, put out by the folks running DragonCon, seems to align with my particular style of SF/F fandom: not entirely the old-school Fandom-with-a-capital-F scene, but also not entirely the more modern multimedia fandoms.
The awards were founded in 2016, and after some growing pains, they seem to have figured themselves out as they enter their ninth year: a solid roundup of science fiction, fantasy, horror, YA comics, games, literature, movies, and television shows. The awards are voted on by attendees and the general public, and while there were a lot of folks who were initially worried that they'd be used by fandom's more right-wing members to push their own books, they've turned out to be a pretty inclusive and far-reaching selection, which I think is a really good thing to see.
Here are the winners from last year.
