Green Mountain Book Festival 2025

Join me in Burlington to talk about science fiction with John Scalzi!

Green Mountain Book Festival 2025

This is something that I've been working on for part of the past year: On October 18th, the Green Mountain Book Festival will welcome John Scalzi and a number of Vermont's speculative fiction writers to Burlington, Vermont for a one-day event all about science fiction!

Other authors will include Craig Alanson (Expeditionary Force), William Alexander (Sunward), M.T. Anderson (Nicked), Emily Hamilton (The Stars Too Fondly), Margot Harrison (The Midnight Club), Mike Luoma (The Star Seeds of Earth), and Brian Staveley (Chronicles of the Unhewn Throne), and myself!

The event will consist of a day of programming:

  • 11:00AM, Writers Round Table with John Scalzi, Phoenix Books. $25. Proceeds will be donated to the Fletcher Free Library. Seats available to the first ten people who register. This program is for writers only and will focus on professional development and publishing. Purchase tickets here.
  • 1:00PM Panel: World Building, , Phoenix Books. Speculative fiction is known for its fantastic worlds and locations. Join William Alexander, Margot Harrison, and Brian Staveley as they talk about what it takes to build a such settings, and what details, considerations, and things you need to keep in mind while writing. $5 ticket (can go toward a book purchase at Phoenix Books)
  • 7:00PM - A conversation with John Scalzi, Fletcher Free Library. Join John Scalzi and Andrew Liptak for a wide-ranging conversation about science fiction, publishing, writing, and quite a bit more. Free to the public.

We'll have signings with the authors between those sessions as well.

I'm really looking forward to this event: it feels like a bit of a throwback to my days writing the now-defunct Geek Mountain State blog, where I ran a series of author events featuring local authors.

The big change to this festival from years past is that we've slimmed it down quite a bit: this one, and future ones will be a single-day event, with a headlining author and programming designed around their book or genre. I'm excited to see how this works this year: it's a bit of a change, but if it works well, we'll be able to run this a couple of times a year, spotlighting different authors and genres as we go.

If you're in Vermont or nearby, consider this your invitation: it should be a good day of panels and discussion.
