Andor Season 2: April 22nd 2025
We finally have a date for the second and final season of the best Star Wars show
We finally know when we'll get to see the next season of Star Wars: Andor: April 22nd, 2025. Lucasfilm revealed the news today at D23: The Ultimate Disney Fan Event in Brazil, along with some other tidbits about the next live-action series, Skeleton Crew (which got a new trailer last week), and got a quick update and sizzle reel of the upcoming film The Mandalorian and Grogu.
Of all those updates, I'm particularly excited to see news about Andor. If you've been reading this newsletter for a while, you'll know exactly why: I think it's one of the best stories in the franchise ever told, because it brings new depth and nuance to the fight between the Empire and Rebellion in ways that the films never quite reached for me. It's political, gritty, exceptionally well-written, and unlike most of Disney's Star Wars output, it's something that I've gone back to watch multiple times.
The first season followed Cassian Andor (who we met in 2016's Rogue One) and follows him as he's sucked into the rebellion. It's an outstanding character study of a person who was somewhat willing to lay low into radicalized member of the revolution against the Empire. This next season will be formatted a little differently from the first season. Written by Dand and Tony Gilroy, Beau Willimon, and Tom Bissell, every couple of episodes will take place in a different year, filling in the five-year gap between Season 1 and Rogue One (with the final three episodes taking place in the leadup to that standalone film.)
I'm looking forward to seeing how that plays out. Presumably, we'll be seeing Alan Tudyk's K-2SO join Cassian this season, and I'm holding out hope that we'll get Ben Daniels back to reprise his role as General Antoc Merrick (if anything, because I cosplay that character)
The season went into production back in November 2022, and hit some delays because of the 2023 Writer's Strike: the show was expected to return this year, but production didn't wrap until February. But now, we at least have a date to look forward to.
